The Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) has announced that it is supporting the Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) UK’s National Drowning Prevention Week campaign, running from tomorrow (Saturday) until next Saturday (June 24).
As the sun continues to shine, they are asking parents to make sure that their children are aware of how to stay safe and enjoy the water during the summer.
RLSS UK has expressed concerns that families may head to beaches and inland water locations, without considering the potential dangers that put themselves and others at risk.
Drowning Prevention Week aims to equip everybody with the skills and knowledge that will help them make the right decisions when considering water safety.
Community safety advisor at RBFRS, Neil Whiteman, said: “We are urging people to take care around Berkshire’s waterways this year, particularly now as the warmer weather is upon us.
“If you do see someone in difficulty, remember ‘Call, Tell and Throw’ – Call 999, tell the person to float on their back and throw something to them to help them float.”
Charity director at the RLSS, Lee Heard, added: “The Drowning Prevention Week campaign is crucial this year.
“In recent years, young people have missed out on the vital opportunity to swim, leaving a dramatic gap in school swimming and water safety education.”

Mr Heard also said: “We urge as many parents as possible to get involved with the campaign, use our free online resources, and give children the skills to enjoy a lifetime of fun in the water.”
