Call to clamp down on speeding along busy Thatcham road

Lots of "moaning and groaning" in the area

A CALL for action has been issued against speeding drivers on a busy Thatcham road.

Concern was raised by a resident who lodged a complaint with Thatcham Town Council about drivers exceeding the 30mph speed limit on Bowling Green Road near the roundabout at Northfield Road and Heath Lane.

The drive to tackle the problem was discussed at a meeting of the town council planning committee last week.

Saying that he knew the problem as he lived right next to it, John Chelliah (Con, Thatcham West) said that police equipped with cameras and speed guns were frequently in the area.

He said there was “a lot of moaning and groaning” in the area, owing to it being the main route for people running their children to schools in Cold Ash so “everyone was in a big hurry”.

Mr Chelliah said the issue was “something that needs to be looked at a little bit more” and asked whether Thames Valley Police could install flashing speed-warning signs at the site.

The town council technical consultant, Chris Watts, said the police or West Berkshire Council could deploy speed monitoring devices if they were satisfied that there was a level of excessive speeding.

Noting that the town council was neither the highway authority or a law enforcement agency, Richard Crumly (Con, Thatcham Central) proposed that the issue be forwarded to the district council and the police to investigate.

Earlier this year, a freedom of information request submitted by the revealed that a mobile camera on Bowling Green Road had generated the most income from speeding drivers in the last five years.

The request also showed that people caught speeding at seven cameras in the town, between January 1, 2010, and January 1, 2015, had collectively been fined £66,360.
