Call to make community a better place for people with dementia

The Newbury Dementia Action Alliance is appealing to local businesses, organisations and community groups to help raise awareness of the condition.
It follows a survey by the Alzheimer’s Society which found that 53 per cent of those living with dementia don’t feel part of their community, and 73 per cent did not think society was geared up to deal with dementia.
Newbury DAA co-ordinator Sue Butterworth said: ‘It’s vital that people living with dementia should still be able to enjoy all Newbury has to offer.
“Many people with dementia have reported feeling trapped in their own homes and let down by their communities, with one in three only getting out once a week and one in 10 only manage this once a month. This is simply unacceptable.
“The Newbury DAA aims to address the isolation that many people living with dementia can feel.
“That’s why we’re calling on Newbury’s local business, services and organisations to commit to help people in the community live well with dementia.”
