Campaign for 'iconic' song gathers pace

A local man's campaign to get Fleetwood Mac's song, The Chain, to number one in the charts, is gathering pace

A WEST Berkshire man's campaign to get an iconic Formula 1 song to number one in the charts has been gathering pace this week.

Last week, Newburytoday.co.uk reported that Formula 1 fan, George Caröe, of Marsh Benham, had started a campaign on social networking websites Facebook and Twitter, aiming to get Fleetwood Mac's song, The Chain, to number one in the charts in time for the new Formula 1 season, which starts in March.

The song, which is used by the BBC in its introductions to Formula 1 coverage, has never reached the number one spot in the UK charts, but the campaign has been backed by the BBC's Formula 1 presenter, Jake Humphrey, and the number of people ‘liking' the Facebook page currently stands at about 2,880.

Mr Caröe, a 20-year-old marketing management student at Southampton Solent University, said: “The reason behind the campaign is simple; to get one of the best and most iconic songs ever, to the well and truly deserved number one spot.”

Mr Caröe added that he and his friends are also trying to get the backing of BBC Radio One to help get the song to number one on Sunday, March 6 - in time for the first race weekend in Bahrain the following week.
