Canal runs dry after damage to lock gates

The damage is believed to have been caused after a hire boat hit the gate at Guyers Lock in Enborne on Sunday morning.
Boats leaving Newbury are now unable to continue their journey towards Kintbury because of the low water level between Guyers Lock and Higgs Lock, close to the A34 Newbury bypass , with no boats being able to get to Newbury from Kintbury.
Member of the Kennet and Avon Canal Trust, John Brodie, said the area was a no go area for boats as the canal was empty between 9:30pm on Sunday and 5:30am on Monday.
Mr Brodie said he had been informing boaters on the canal that they needed to either head back towards Aldermaston or wait for the repair work to be carried out by the Canal and River Trust.
"Also to people with dogs do not let them and others go in the empty canal as you will get stuck and you will in time sink in so please be careful," Mr Brodie said.
A spokesman for the Canal and River Trust, Joe Coggins, said that engineers would be assessing the damage today (Tuesday) morning.
