How Newbury Cancer Care powered through Covid challenge
DEMAND for Newbury Cancer Care's transport facility is increasing as medical services recover from the worst ravages of the coronavirus pandemic.
The charity remained active during lockdown periods, providing 579 journeys for 100 different patients to 16 different destinations including London and Southampton – something of the order of 37,000 miles.
Trustee Chris Bartlam said: "The demand during 2021 was unfortunately down to about 50 per cent compared with normal years – but it's gratifying to note that the demand is picking up as more opportunities arise for our clientele to receive treatments and consultations.

"Despite the Covid pandemic, Newbury Cancer Care has remained active and progressive.
"During this time, the charity has also been getting on with existing projects and starting new ones to the benefit of West Berkshire Community Hospital and those using the facilities there."
In addition, a new agreement has been established with the Sue Ryder charity, providing funding for it to continue and expand the beneficial therapies that it provides in The Rosemary Centre in the community hospital.
Mr Bartlam went on: "We've also been looking to improve aspects around The Rainbow Rooms [at the community hospital] – a new garden is under way and, so far, new French windows and curtains have been installed to each of the ground floor rooms of Donnington Ward; new patios have been laid outside enabling patients and their relatives to go outside into the garden either in a wheelchair or even their bed to get fresh air in the better weather.
"Tables and chairs have been purchased and are ready for the garden completion."
Meanwhile a new walkway canopy has been installed between the main hospital building and The Rosemary Centre, improving the connectivity and shelter.
Mr Bartlam said: "Our ongoing thanks, as always, to the unwavering support of all our friends and donors, without whom we could not provide these benefits."
If you are undergoing treatment for cancer, the charity’s "friendly, capable and experienced drivers" can provide help with transport to and from appointments.
