According to Bob Mitchell, watch manager of Red Watch at Newbury Fire Station, one pump was called from Newbury at 11.31am, to the A34 southbound at Tot Hill, where a Land Rover Discovery was on fire, following an engine fault.
“The driver saw smoke coming out of the dashboard and pulled over. It was well alight and completely destroyed,” said Mr Mitchell.
The driver was unhurt, after he pulled into a layby and got out of the vehicle when he saw the smoke.
Firefighters used one hosereel to extinguish the blaze before closing the incident and leaving the scene after about three quarters of an hour.
The A34 remained open throughout.
