'Car-mageddon' arrives three days later than expected

Delays on all major roads this morning

'CAR-MAGEDDON' has officially arrived - three days later than expected.

Motorists were warned to expect a "year of traffic hell" when Boundary Road - one of the town's busiest through routes - closed for 12 months on Monday.

After a relatively quiet first three days, the "hell" arrived this morning, with the A4 and A339 gridlocked.

Cars were queuing on the A34 just to get on the slip road at Speen, with nose-to-tail traffic all the way from Speen to the Robin Hood roundabout.

There were also delays of 25 minutes from the Vodafone roundabout coming into Newbury on the A339.

On the other side of town, there were queues on the A339 Newtown Road, going passed St John's roundabout and stretching right back to Old Newtown Road.

Other motorists got in touch with Newburytoday to say it was taking them ten minutes just to get around the Robin Hood roundabout.

The A4 into Newbury from Thatcham was also stop-start.
