Care UK’s Winchcombe Place care home on Maple Crescent in Newbury organises Remembrance Day parade
A Newbury care home took part in Remembrance Day commemorations on the weekend along with members of the local community.
Residents and team members at Care UK’s Winchcombe Place on Maple Crescent welcomed the public for a special parade and wreath laying in memory of those lost to war.
On Sunday, residents who either served or had family who served in the armed forces marched along the street in front of the home. A small service was then offered, before a trumpeter played a moving rendition of The Last Post.
Care home resident Kenneth Bellamy, 95, said: “It was a great day seeing so many people come together to remember.
“I served many years ago, so days like these are so important for me to remember. We must not ever forget.”
The home was decorated with more than 700 poppies and welcomed a 1940’s jeep to mark the poignant occasion.
Reflecting on the past, guests also had the opportunity to listen to wartime stories shared by residents who lived through the Second World War, before asking them questions about what life was like back then.
Winchcombe Place’s home manager Clare Cullen said: “It was incredibly moving to see the residents laying their wreaths to remember our fallen heroes.
“We all wore our poppies with pride, to show our respect and keep their memory alive.
“At Winchcombe Place, we often spend time sharing memories and chatting about the history many of the residents have lived through – including World War Two.
“It is always emotional to hear memories from residents who served in the armed forces.
“The parade really was a heartfelt and poignant experience for everyone.”
