Carriageway closure on A34 could stem into evening rush hour, warns Highways Agency
The stretch of the bypass was closed following a serious collision involving two heavy goods vehicles at around 4.30am, and motorists are currently experiencing delays of around three hours to their journeys.
Those travelling northbound are being diverted via the A4130, A417, A338 and A420 to rejoin the A34 at Botley, however drivers are being advised to avoid the area.
A statement released by the Highways Agency said: “The Highways Agency is currently working hard with Thames Valley Police to reopen the carriageway as soon as it is safe to do so.
“The vehicles are currently being recovered; the operation has been complicated because the load on one of the vehicles has shifted.
“There is also a substantial diesel on the carriageway which will need to be cleared up, with possible repairs necessary, once recovery has taken place.”
A spokeswoman for the South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS), Michelle Archer, confirmed this morning that five patients were treated, three of which suffered minor injuries.
One patient suffered facial injuries and another chest and arm injuries. The severity of these injuries has not yet been confirmed.
Mrs Archer said that four ambulance crews and one ambulance officer were sent to the incident at 4.27am and all patients were taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford.
