Cat missing following Hungerford canal boat blaze

Distinctive black and white Manx cat

A CAT has gone missing following a recent fire on a canal boat in Hungerford, with an appeal to search outhouses and likely locations.

The fire, last Tuesday evening (October 4), at The Croft, destroyed the boat, but a cat living on board has since gone missing.

The black and white Manx female cat (pictured), with a stump of a tail, aged nine, is called Rosie.

A friend of the family whose boat was destroyed said firefighters could not find any trace of the cat on board and it had been assumed therefore that the cat had escaped the fire, and had since been missing.

"Vets and Cat Protection and the Blue Cross have been contacted, with posts on several (social media) groups, and people have been walking the canal talking to people, knocking on boats for information.

So far, there has been no sightings," she said.

According to the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) three pumps from Newbury, Hungerford and Wantage, together with the water rescue unit from Caversham Road, Reading were called at 9.51pm to The Croft, where a canal boat was ablaze.

No-one was hurt.

Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the fire using a main jet and hydrant.

The canal boat was 90 per cent destroyed in the incident.

The fire service did not have any details as to the cause.
