Catch Fringe preview before musical comedian heads to Edinburgh
Champion turned his hand to musical comedy in 2012, after a two-decade career writing original music for Emmy and BAFTA-winning television programmes and films. He realised he was on to something when his video for That Auto-Correct Song went viral, with 150,000 hits on YouTube.
Having made it to the Edinburgh stages of So You Think You’re Funny, the semi-final of the Musical Comedy Awards and the final of last year’s You Must Be Joking comedy competition, Mr Champion has now written an hour-long solo show, which he will be performing daily at the Fringe, at the Gilded Balloon Teviot venue, from July 31 to August 26.
The show will see the accomplished musician playing guitar and keyboard while musing on what makes us human and celebrating the universal traits that unite us all – is it all about cooking, superstition and texting while drunk? And can we really clone a Neanderthal?
“It turns out that, among many other things we have in common, all human cultures enjoy wordplay, music and jokes,” said Champion, “so if you’re a human, this show is for you.”
Newbury folk who are not planning on making the trip to Edinburgh next month can see Champion perform his show in a double bill with fellow musical comedian Ant Dewson, at Ace Space, St Nicholas Road, on Friday, July 19. Dewson will be performing his own show, Now That’s What I Call Musical Comedy, also in preparation for an Edinburgh run.
Tickets for Champion and Dewson cost £7 in advance from Hogan Music, Craven Road, Jacqui’s in Blenheim Road, or by calling 07905 590214. Tickets will also be available on the door for £9.
