Cause of Newbury flat kitchen fire under investigation
Blaze not being treated as suspicious
THE CAUSE of a kitchen fire yesterday evening (Mon) at a Newbury flat was under investigation.
Two fire engines from Newbury were called at around 5pm to Green Lane, off Craven Road.
The householder, a woman with a baby, had returned to the flat to discover the smoke alarm sounding, before opening the door to discover the first floor property full of smoke.
She then closed the door and telephoned the emergency services.
No-one was hurt.
Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the fire with a hosereel.
The cause of the fire was under investigation, but was not being treated as suspicious, according to the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS).
The property was affected by smoke with a fire support services vehicle also at the scene.
Firefighters left after approximately one and a half hours.
The fire was believed to have been smoldering all day and the fire service therefore afterwards issued the fire safety message that anyone hearing a smoke alarm sounding in a property should immediately alert the fire service.
