Census 2021: West Berkshire statistics




Around four in 10 people in West Berkshire say they have no religion.

Data from the 2021 national census also points to the district being 47.1 per cent Christian, with more than 40 per cent saying they had no religion.

The census is carried out every 10 years by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

The average age of people in West Berkshire is 43 and there are slightly more women than men – 50.6 per cent are female, and 49.4 per cent male.

The household make up sits at around 68 per cent for single family households.

But two person households have the biggest percentage at 36.2 per cent, one person households at 27 per cent and homes with three people in the home at 16.5 per cent. Four or more people made up 20.3 per cent of West Berkshire's households.

Eighty-eight per cent of people living in West Berkshire were born in the UK, with 4.9 per cent born in Europe, two per cent in Africa and 3.1 per cent from the Middle East or Asia.

Ninety-two per cent of people in West Berkshire are white, 3.7 per cent identify as Asian or British Asian, and 1.3 per cent as black.

One in 10 of households across England and Wales are now made up of people from two or more different ethnic groups.

Luton, Birmingham and Leicester are among 14 areas in England where people identifying as white are now in the minority.

In terms of national identity, among those who described it as not being the UK, the most common response was Polish, followed by Romanian.

More than 90 per cent of West Berkshire residents said they had the same address the previous year.

Around four per cent of the district had previously served in the UK armed forces and reserves.

Around 12 per cent of people in West Berkshire do not have a passport.
