Royal British Legion's Kingsclere branch celebrates 100th birthday

The Kingsclere branch of the Royal British Legion will be commemorating its 100th anniversary this weekend.

The branch was first established on March 6, 1922, and tomorrow (Sunday) it will celebrate its centenary.

There will be a short service at 3pm at St Mary’s Church, during which a centenary pennant will be blessed and added to the branch standard.

The service will be performed by the Rev Ben Read – and it will be Mr Read’s last before he leaves the village for training ahead of a Christian mission abroad.

The service will be open to the public.

Branch chairman Kate Oldershaw said: “We’re only one year younger than the legion itself, and this is recognising the selfless contribution of volunteers from within the village.

“A lot of the smaller branches are closing and we’re able to keep going because of our volunteers who want to help in their own small way.”

There will be a closed reception for Royal British Legion members, honoured guests and serving personnel who are friends of the branch after the service, when a cheque of £1,000 will be presented to the Hampshire county branch.

For a detailed report of the service and reception, see next week’s Newbury Weekly News.
