Challenge thrown down to rising stars at Kennet
The Kennet School Rising Stars programme aims to make every Year 7 pupil excel in a range of academic, sporting, artistic and charitable endeavours.
The programme, which charts the progress of every individual while offering rewards and encouragement along the way, was launched last week by London 2012 rugby paralympian, Aaron Phipps, and the pastoral deputy, Bernadette McNally.
Mr Phipps is no stranger to the school, having graced the stage at the Sports Personality of the Year awards this summer.
He said: “I am delighted to be back at such a vibrant school. I am very impressed by your wonderful group of young people, your enthusiasm, your energy and your courtesy.
“I encourage you to take on board every opportunity this excellent school provides and I know that you will benefit greatly from the Rising Stars project.
“When I was your age I never thought I would be particularly good at school or in sport, never mind reach the huge honour of representing my country at the Olympics.”
The headmaster, Paul Dick, said: “It is great to have Aaron Phipps back here again. He is an outstanding athlete and, just as importantly, an outstanding person.
“I hope we can all attempt to follow his path to success, and learn from his words about hard work and commitment. The rewards in the Rising Stars programme are clear. Earn them.”
