Chance to network at Volunteer Centre West Berkshire open day

Doors open to general public, including carers/those in their care

AN OPEN day at Newbury town hall tomorrow (Wednesday) offers a chance to network and find out more about voluntary work carried out across West Berkshire.

Director of the Volunteer Centre West Berkshire for the past 17 years, Garry Poulson, has invited members of the public – including any carers and those in their care – along to the open day, which will include the charity’s AGM.

Mr Poulson said: “We thought that an open day, rather than the usual style of AGM, would be of greater benefit.

“People can still come and ask questions about our services, or make suggestions about how we could improve, but in a less formal way.”

Well-known for its transport services such as The Volunteer Car Scheme, Newbury Handybus and Newbury Shopmobility, the centre also supports groups in their efforts to recruit volunteers.

Margaret Gould of Young People and Children First said: “We work very closely with the Volunteer Centre West Berkshire who have been marvellous at finding us a wide variety of volunteers of high quality and with an exceptionally wide variety of talents, from Flexiteers - with H&S, or accounting experience, to Russian conversationalists.

“Our organisation is undeniably richer in skills and better at supporting our young people for having the Volunteer Centre help us.”

In the last two years the charity has established the West Berkshire Village Agent Service, a Restorative Justice Service, a mental health support project and this year it has commenced a project to aid the over 65s who are isolated, to smooth their pathway in and out of hospital.

The centre facilitated around £750,000 worth of community participation to the end of March this year, equating to around 60,000 hours of volunteer time, valued at the rate of £12.50 per hour.

Enjoy a cup of tea and informal chat with the volunteer centre’s team, between 10am and 3pm, in the council chamber at Newbury Town Hall. All welcome.

Copies of the charity’s impact report will be available.
