Change of location for Remembrance Sunday service
A Service of Remembrance will take place in the Market Place in Newbury this year on Sunday, November 13
CHANGES have been made to the Remembrance Sunday service and parade in Newbury this year.
The proceedings will take place on Sunday, November 13, with the main parade setting off from Pelican Lane at 10.30am and marching along Northbrook Street and Mansion House Street, where the mayor of Newbury, Jeff Beck, will take the salute.
The parade will then continue to the Market Place where a brief Service of Remembrance will take place this year to accommodate the growing numbers of people attending the service.
In previous years, the service has taken place near the War Memorial outside St Nicolas Church, but last year, a plea was made by Spencer Emmett to move the War Memorial to the Market Place.
He said: “We had to move the Beavers up to the front so they could see. We need a much bigger area so that people can view.”
And Newbury Town Council has announced the change for this year, which it said it hopes will allow the younger members of the community to see what is happening and allow everyone attending to feel more comfortable.
The service in the Market Place will start at about 10.53am and service sheets will be available on the day.
Following the service, the parade will march past the War Memorial where wreaths will be laid on the way into St Nicolas Church.
The leader of the town council, Julian Swift-Hook (Lib Dem, Pyle Hill), said: “The traditional Remembrance Sunday parade and service is one of the most important events in Newbury's civic calendar, and the changes that we have made this year will make it much easier for everyone to support the parade and join in with the commemoration service.”
