Changes to Remembrance Sunday parade

The Newbury parade will take on a new route tomorrow (Sunday)

THE Newbury Remembrance Day parade tomorrow (Sunday), in which veterans march to commemorate those who have died whilst serving their country in armed conflict, will differ from previous years.

Starting at 10.30am from the town's Royal British Legion headquarters in Pelican Lane, the procession will march down Northbrook Street and into Market Place for the ceremony at 11am.

Previously the war memorial at St Nicolas church was the stopping point for the service.

It is hoped that the extra space in the square will allow up to 1000 more people to watch.

Public viewing areas will be lined around Market Square, and a bugler will stand on the steps outside NatWest bank.

A short service will lead by the Rev. Keri Eynon and a wreath will be laid at the war memorial at St Nicolas Church after the ceremony.

Along with many other West Berkshire dignitaries, Scouts, Girl Guides and Brownies, as well as Royal British Legion members and servicemen and women from the 42 Engineer Regiment (Geographic) at Hermitage will all be taking part.

Meanwhile, Royal British Legion poppy sellers got into full swing this week.

Typical of those giving up their time were members of the Thatcham branch of the legion, including squadron leader John Sharpe and Alan Sheppard, who set up a stall near Waitrose last Saturday, selling small and large poppies, wreaths and small wooden crosses.

They were supported in their efforts by members of the Multi Vehicle Trust, who took along several wartime jeeps to form a display alongside in Thatcham Broadway, including Roy Parr and George Ralph.
