Chapel conversion 'most appropriate option' to retain heritage character

The chapel, in The Thicket, has been empty since 2010 after dwindling numbers forced its closure.
Newbury-based Carter Jonas has now submitted an application on behalf of the Kennet And Test Valley Methodist Circuit, which has decided to sell the building that currently includes, a main hall, lobby entrance and two small storage rooms on either side.
A statement by Carter Jonas said: “The church has regretfully decided to sell the building because of dwindling attendance rates and is now seeking permission for residential use prior to the sale.
“It is considered that conversion to a single dwelling is the most appropriate option and the scheme put forward is considered to represent a sympathetic conversion of this attractive old building.
“The application retains the main character of the building, does not harm the amenity of nearby houses, provides adequate off-street parking and protects the long term future of this heritage asset.”
West Berkshire Council is expected to make a decision on the application by June 1.
