"Character" to be restored to West Mills Cottages

Numbers 15 to 21 West Mills could once again become a three-bed and six two-bed cottages on the road which runs alongside the Kennet and Avon canal, having been empty of businesses since June.
“These were never intended to be offices,” said planning agent for the conversion, Rob McLennan. “They will be made fit for modern day living, whilst ensuring the character and special historic interest of the individual cottages and terrace as a whole are preserved and where possible enhanced.
“The application proposes a renovation of the dwellings to a condition and arrangement as they previously existed before their arguably inappropriate conversion to offices in the 1980s.”
Minor changes are thought to be necessary to the external appearance of the dwellings, proposed to have individual parking spaces and amenity space close to the town centre.
The conversion was strongly supported by Newbury Town Councillors at a recent planning and highways committee, with David Allen (Lib-Dem, Victoria) describing the proposal as “an absolute no brainer.”
He said: “Family houses with gardens with parking spaces in the town centre... I strongly support this.”
A decision is expected from West Berkshire Council by December 13.
