7,000 head to Newbury Racecourse for Newbury Lions Club's annual charity Fireworks Spectacular
Thousands of people enjoyed the ohhs and ahhs of Newbury Lions Club’s annual firework display on Saturday – raising money for good causes in the area.
Even the rain couldn’t stop 7,000 heading to Newbury Racecourse for the annual charity fireworks spectacular.
The display of red, blue, green and gold eruptions, lit up the night sky just after 7.30pm after a countdown from Newbury’s mayor, Gary Norman.
“The fireworks were absolutely fantastic and people seemed to have a great time,” said Margo Payne, of the Lions Club.
“We had fantastic support from the community which puts money back into our coffers to give to the community.
“We were very pleased with the turnout and we think the fireworks were the best yet.
“We were not expecting to get numbers back like that; it was astounding.”
Mrs Payne said an additional 2,000 had bought tickets online on the day, but being a ticket only event ensured that everyone got into the venue without any delays.
She acknowledged, however, that it was difficult with 7,000 people leaving at once and said for next year they will also be looking to have more food and drink stands to help feed and water the hungry crowds.
As well as the fireworks display, which was set to music, there was also a magician, Ugly Duckling Pottery and temporary tattoos keeping the children amused.
Mrs Payne also extended her thanks to all the volunteers who helped make the day such a success – including many who spent more than 12 hours at the racecourse on Saturday.
“We also had a number of refugees from the Regency Park Hotel volunteer to help us,” she said. “They were amazing and we couldn’t have managed it without them.
We also had help from Newbury Rotary and other Lions Clubs; an incredible bunch of volunteers.
“It was a long day, but well worth it.”
The money raised for good causes across the district is still being counted.
