Greenham Trust holds Sleep Out in Newbury in aid of Cost of Living Fund

Greenham Trust held its sponsored sleep out in Newbury town centre last week in aid of its Cost of Living appeal.

Councillors and charity members camped overnight in the cold outside the Corn Exchange on Thursday (November 21).

They raised in excess of £13,000, with match funding and gift aid — hitting more than half of its total target.

The funds will be used to offer grants to frontline charities providing emergency aid to individuals and families facing poverty in West Berkshire.

The charity also volunteered with Newbury Soup Kitchen through the evening and undertook further fundraising up Northbrook Street, before finally calling it a night.

CEO of Greenham Trust Chris Boulton said: “As we approach another challenging winter, it’s crucial that we do all we can to support our community’s most vulnerable.”

Fran Chamings, manager at West Berks Foodbank, added: “We know of families that are rationing food.

“Households are washing their clothes by hand in cold water. Working parents come to us for baby formula and nappies. Pensioners are asking for incontinence and denture products as they can no longer afford them.

“We urge you to help if you can to relieve hunger, restore dignity and revive hope.”
