Charity lays down challenge for coffee morning

Macmillan Cancer has a glittering new cup to award to the best 'World's Biggest Coffee Morning' event

A CHALLENGE has been thrown down to the Berkshire company which raises the most money for charity at their World's Biggest Coffee Morning (WBCM) on Friday, September 30.

The event is Macmillan Cancer Supports' biggest fundraiser and this year it has pledged to award a glittering trophy to the company which raises the most money at their coffee morning - The World's Biggest Coffee Morning Berkshire Challenge Cup.

“The huge cup will be engraved with the company name and it will be yours to proudly keep and display for a year...who knows who might nab the title in 2012,” said the charity's fundraising manager, Jan Treacher-Evans.

Meanwhile, coffee cups are being dusted down and cakes baked ready for the coffee morning events in West Berkshire.

Those already planning events include Beenham Primary School and Thatcham Garden Centre.

Parent, Emily Allan, whose daughter attends Beenham primary, said she and other organisers of the school's coffee morning had approached Starbucks, Krispy Kreme and Sainsbury's for donations.

On the day, she added that the school assembly would include an explanation about the charity and its work, followed by a mufti (casual clothes) day, cake sale and cafe, with pupils acting as waiters/waitresses to boost funds and members of the local community would be welcome.

Thatcham Garden Centre will be offering customers free tea and coffee for a donation to the charity, between 9am and 12pm.

Last year's World's Biggest Coffee Morning raised over £8m after 43,000 people across the country signed up to hold a coffee morning and the charity hopes to beat that total this year.
