Project Salama celebrates three years of providing vital support to domestic abuse survivors around Newbury and Thatcham
A grassroots charity providing support to domestic abuse survivors has marked its third anniversary.
Project Salama runs biweekly drop-in coffee mornings and day trips around Newbury and Thatcham in aid of domestic abuse victims and their families.
Sessions rely on community support and the charity’s fundraising party on Saturday (May 24) has helped it continue its vital work.
Fundraising and peer support volunteer Shazia Ali explained: “Saturday’s anniversary was a positive community moment and a reflection of our effort behind the scenes.
“While core crisis services are provided by larger organisations such as Berkshire Women’s Aid, Salama also focuses on ongoing community-based connection, often supporting those further along in their journey.”
She continued: “Last year we were able to take our survivors to Bournemouth and to Vue for a movie.
“We would love to do more activities and events for them but need the funds.
“This was my final event with Project Salama, and I’m pleased to have concluded on such a successful note.”
Organisers wish to thank mayor of Thatcham Petra Pemberton, Frank Hutchings Community Hall, Mr Muddle the Magic Man, DJ Fatboy, Tesco Wokingham & Bracknell and Co-op Speen for their support.
Thatcham Town Council has also awarded a grant of £250, which will secure its future ‘Chai & Chat’ sessions in the town.
Women are often signposted to sessions by external agencies.
