Charity shop chirpy in Cheap Street

The new shop was opened by the mayor of Newbury, Arthur Johnson, who cut a ribbon donated by the Kennet Shopping centre florist, and two local children presented the mayoress Kathryn Humble with a bouquet before heading into the warm for cake and coffee, donated by Boswells café.
The event was one of nostalgia for volunteer, Tereska Welch, who began her working life at the shop when it was Penn’s Shoe shop in 1963.
Shop leader Dilys West said that good teamwork had made the move successful and that the volunteers were thrilled with the new shop.
It recently-received a new computer from Micro Focus employee and Save the Children volunteer Divya Perumalswarmy, which Mrs West said would make a big difference to how the shop would be run,
However, she added that if anyone had a printer they could donate to the store, it would be appreciated.
Mrs West hoped that the shop’s much-valued support from customers would continue. It was now looking for new donations and volunteers.
Anyone who can help should either go into the shop, or telephone ( 01635) 35191.
