Chicken the cat wins award for supporting autistic Thatcham boy

A cat named Chicken has bagged a national award for the support she’s given to an autistic boy in Thatcham.

Chicken has an “incredible bond” with 11-year-old Elliot Abery and has made his Thatcham home a “calm sanctuary”.

The 10-year-old cat was honoured at the Cats Protection’s National Cat Awards in recognition of the support, love and companionship she gives to Elliot, who is autistic and suffers with anxiety.

Chicken was chosen by 2019 X-Factor contestants turned social media stars, identical twins, Max and Harvey Mills as winner of the Furr-ever Friends category.

Elliot’s mother Jenny Abery said: “Chicken is a one in a million and I’m thrilled she’s been recognised for the amazing cat she is.

“She has brought so much joy, fun and comfort into Elliot’s life and the bond they share is priceless.”

She accompanied her son at the awards ceremony at London’s Savoy Hotel to accept Chicken’s trophy and prize package – which included a £200 pet store voucher.

She continued: “I have always had cats in my life, but Chicken is particularly special and over the years has helped transform our home into a calm sanctuary for Elliot.

“She always does things to make him laugh and this is part of her charm.

“I really hope Elliot and Chicken’s bond will highlight how incredible cats can be for autistic people, particularly children.”

Judges Max and Harvey called the decision making “immensely difficult” but said the relationship between Chicken and Elliot “stood out” among their furry competitors.

Chicken also narrowly missed out on being named National Cat of the Year, a title that instead went to joint winners Jasper and Willow, a pair of rescue cats who provide comfort to patients at St Peter & St James Hospice in Sussex.

Cats Protection’s National Cat Awards organiser Cat Jarvis said: “Chicken exemplifies everything we love about cats and their ability to find a special place in our hearts and homes.

“Her caring nature and devotion to Elliot show just how remarkable cats can be for children, particularly those facing extra challenges like anxiety.”
