Mental health charity Response opens wellbeing hub in Thatcham
Mental health support for children and young people in West Berkshire has been given a welcome boost with the opening of a wellbeing hub.
The centre in Thatcham, launched by charity Response, is designed to help reduce NHS waiting times and relieve pressure on schools.
The newly-refurbished site off the High Street, which will care for children as young as 11 and their families, promises to offer a safe, inclusive and compassionate space for youngsters experiencing anxieties, friendship issues, low mood or worries around self-esteem.
After-school drop-ins, one-to-one support and group sessions will all be available.
Jamie Douglas, associate director of children, young people and families at Response, said: “We have already witnessed how vital this hub is to the young people and families of Thatcham.
“The official launch marks a major milestone for Response, and will provide a significant boost for local families.
“This opening is the result of months of planning so our work can reach as many people who require our support and guidance as possible, and credit must go to our entire team who have worked tirelessly to reach this stage.
“We know that demand for services of this kind is growing, though, and that schools are asking for more support.
“The need for additional funding, resources and willing volunteers has never been more timely, and we’re excited by the potential of our new Thatcham hub.”
Newbury MP Lee Dillon was joined by Thatcham mayor Petra Pemberton and representatives from Response and other local organisations to celebrate the hub’s official opening on Friday, October 3.
The centre has already worked with 24 young people since its soft launch in May, with the majority of referrals so far coming from schools.
Mr Dillon said: “The opening of Thatcham Wellbeing Hub is fantastic news for our community.
“It’s so much more than a building, it’s a place of hope and support for young people.
“The Response team have worked incredibly hard to make this vision a reality, and their dedication really shines through.
“From the drop-in sessions to the one-to-one REACH support, this hub will provide a safe, welcoming space where young people can get help, connect with others, and build confidence.”
