Chimney fire drama in Newbury town centre




Firefighters use hydraulic platform to reach the roof

THERE was drama in Newbury town centre today (Tuesday) as a chimney caught fire.

The incident happened at the Waggon and Horses in Market Place.

Licensee Lee Kelly said firefighters were called around lunchtime after smoke kept billowing from a chimney above a fire in the grate.

They used a huge raising platform to gain access to the roof before deploying rods to dislodge soot and hoses to pour water inside.

Shoppers stopped to watch the scene unfold until the incident was over at 3.30pm.
