Christians gather for Walk of Witness
Organised by Christians Together in the Newbury Area (CTNA), the event remembers Jesus’ walk from his trial to his crucifixion, and brings a number of churches in the community together.
Nearly 300 people attended a service at Newbury Methodist Church, Northbrook Street, on Friday morning.
A large wooden cross was carried by Nat Tinkler from the church and up Northbrook Street, where a hymn was sung outside Tescos and major Barbara Warner from the Newbury Corps of the Salvation Army led a sermon.
The cross was then carried by the Revd. John Bramhall who led the crowd to St Nicolas’ Church, West Mills, where the Rev Will Hunter Smart led a service, before everyone was invited into the church hall for hot cross buns and drinks to raise money for Christian Aid.
Chair of the CTNA, Colin Powell, said: “The Walk of Witness is made up of representatives of 16 churches and 16 Christian organisations, as an act of unity in a public place, demonstrating the importance of the death of Christ, which we celebrate every day but in particular we celebrate together on Good Friday.”
