Christmas comes to Newbury market
Bands, choirs and market traders will be giving Market Place a festive feel this month
NEWBURY market will have an especially festive feel this month with a series of performances from local choirs and bands set to spread a bit of Christmas cheer.
Visitors to the market, which is held every Thursday and Saturday in the Market Place, Northbrook Street and Bartholomew Street, will be treated to a selection of seasonal tunes from this Saturday, when Watership Brass will be holding its annual coffee morning and performing Christmas carols, inside and outside the town hall.
Harmony Choir will be singing between 10am and noon on Saturday, December 12, and the Kennet Christian Centre will carry on in the festive spirit, singing carols in the afternoon.
The Trinity Community Choir will be in full voice on Saturday, December 19, between 10am and noon.
The market will be open every Thursday and Saturday leading up to Christmas, as usual offering around 40 regular stalls including jewellery, handmade chocolates, felt crafts, bone china collectables, CDs and food stalls, some of which have been trading in Newbury for more than 60 years.
The market will only close for one day on Boxing Day, Saturday, December 26.
Councillor Martha Vickers, chair of the Market Working Party at Newbury Town Council, said: “Whatever the weather our loyal market traders will be there on Thursdays and Saturdays throughout the year, providing that special experience which is market shopping.
“So put on your scarf and gloves and come and see what’s on offer this Christmas season.
“Re-discover your Newbury market and enjoy the festive atmosphere.”
