Burghclere church hosting café-style services to bring in worshippers

A Burghclere church has been experimenting with a new style of service to try to widen its appeal and bring in more worshippers.

Over the past few months, Church of the Ascension on Harts Lane has hosted ‘café church’ events, which sees attendees sitting at tables rather than in pews.

The service starts with the provision of cereals, toast and croissants, with tea, coffee and soft drinks also provided.

There are hymns and a shortened sermon which are displayed on a large screen, and during the sermon the younger children are involved in activities elsewhere in the church.

The services at Burghclere will now take this form on the last Sunday of every month, varied occasionally when this Sunday coincides with an annual festival such as Christmas.

Following the success of these events, Saint Mary the Virgin with Saint John the Baptist Church in Newtown is also now providing refreshments after each of its fortnightly Sunday morning services.
