City Arts & Crafts Fairs

Support local artists and makers this weekend

MORE than 20 local artists and makers come together over two weekends – this Saturday and Sunday (11am to 3pm) and the following week – at Christmas Fairs at City Arts, Hampton Road, Newbury. The stalls will vary over the two weekends, so it is worth visiting twice.

Artists include Open Studios ceramicists Martin Eastabrook and Sally Bettridge, photographer Deborah Taylor, painters Kate Steele, Amanda Bates, Susan Hubbard and Isabel Carmona, textile artists Sue Crook and Wendy Lloyd, silk painters Helen Mortimer and Sarah Moorcroft, wood turner Jim Crockat and glass artist Tigi Hignell. Photographers Donna Lewis and Rachel Cheer will also have stalls. Other participating artists are Brenda Harding, who presents silver/lampwork jewellery, Carol Hansen with her felting work, and Antonia McGall’s upcycled furniture and other table decorations. Local residents Pat Lawlor, Colleen Walker and Doriana Hignell are participating with Christmas gifts and preserves. The Dorothy Aromando Art
Fund will run a stall on Saturday, November 28.

One of the fair organisers, Isabel Carmona, says: “This kind of event that includes both local artists and residents is what we have in mind for the future. The event is free and supports local artists and craftspeople get known in the area.”

The fairs will help raise funds for City Arts Newbury, for the refurbishment of the chapel and to help run events like the
Chalkfest, held in July, and the Big Draw days held in October.

City Arts Newbury gained
planning permission in 2014 to transform the old Methodist chapel at 10 Hampton Road into a community-orientated arts hub.
