Closed signs go up at Greenham ballroom and sports hall

Greenham Common Trust, the owners of the Liberty Ballroom and sports hall, at Greenham Business Park, confirmed this week the building was closed, after the tenant, Stephen Hunt, who traded as Liberty Ballroom, was declared bankrupt on August 22:
“The Official Receiver disclaimed the lease via a notice dated 5th September 2013 which we received on September 9th,” said Julian May, a spokesman for the trust.
Neither the ballroom, or sports hall, both housed in the same building, he continued, had operated since this date.
The trust, he continued, had not been involved in the management of the premises, beyond its role as landlord, and therefore did not have any information on which, or how many sports and dance groups, or other individuals and organisations, had been affected by the sudden closure of the building.
Notification of the closure to those hiring the facilities he added, was the responsibility of the previous tenant, rather than the trust, who had no involvement in the management of the premises.
Mr Hunt was unavailable for comment, as the NWN went to press.
Confirming the trust was in the process of securing a new tenant, Mr May continued:
“We want to find a suitable tenant to take over the management of the building.”
“We are currently in discussions with potential tenants and will make an announcement when a new tenant is found.”
Main users of the ballroom, Newbury’s Ceroc (modern jive) group, run by Ceroc teachers and Blues dance champions, Val and David Rokov, confirmed a temporary move to The Starlight Lounge, Pit Hall Barn Farm, Ramsdell, until a decision was made on any new lease for the Greenham ballroom.
Also affected was a Wednesday evening ballroom dance group, taught by international professional ballroom dancer, Zoey Price. The group also confirmed a move to a temporary venue at Newbury’s Royal British Legion building, in Pelican Lane, Newbury.
