Sewa is a sanskrit word and is embedded in the Dharmic traditions of ancient India. It means to sacrifice your time and resources for the benefit of others without wanting anything in return.

The coffee morning was in support of Newbury-based homeless charity Loose Ends and to help fund Newbury Town Council’s plans to plant 100 trees around the town.

Bharati Shakha volunteers prepared 25 different varieties of Indian snacks for guests to enjoy.

Deputy mayor Andy Moore was present at the event and said he appreciated both the food and the cause.

A Bharati Shakha Newbury spokesperson said: “We would like to thank the volunteers for all of their outstanding efforts in preparing the food and all the efforts in coordinating for the event.

“We are delighted with the response to this and all our past fundraising events and we hope to continue hosting successful fundraising events in the future.”

It is also hoped that with help from Greenham Trust and some corporate sponsorship, the fundraising total will be increased.
