Two pumps from Newbury Fire Station were called at 10.25pm to the church, in St John’s Road.
The source of the smoke was tracked down to a boiler flue and the incident was put down to a false alarm, due to freezing cold conditions creating a thick smoke plume.
Firefighters were at the scene half an hour.
