Colossal home-made cake sale in Newbury high street today (Saturday)

Held in aid of the charity Help for Heroes, which raises money to support members of the Armed Forces who have been wounded in the service of their country, last year’s sale raised £6,766 and organisers say topping that amount this year would be the icing on the cake.
Pam Garland, from Burghclere, said: "We sold around 1,500 cakes and biscuits last year.
"We have been astounded over the last few years, it’s humbling, the number of people who bake for us."
Hero the Bear, the charity’s mascot, is expected to put in a guest appearance, held in Northbrook Street, outside the Camp Hopson department store, from 9am until noon, with Newbury MP Richard Benyon also expected to lend his support.
Cakes can be donated until the day of the sale, or on the day, for information contact Pam Garland, email pam.garland@talk21.com
