Organisers bemoan lack of male auditionees for next year's town show

AUDITIONS for next year's Hungerford Town Show risk being derailed by of a lack of male contenders.

Community of Hungerford Theatre Company chairman David Clayton announced this week that the flagship production next February will be Brigadoon.

A musical play in two acts by My Fair Lady creators Lerner and Loewe, it tells the tale of an enchanted village that appears out of the Highland mist for one day in every 100 years.

But company spokesman Barry Waddell said: “Auditions are well underway for principle roles but, as is often the case, men are the problem.”Show director David Clayton said: “We're looking for two young men - one aged 18 to 25 who must be able to dance and act and another aged 20 to, a light, lyric tenor who needs to be able to act and dance.

“Men of all ages would be welcome for the chorus, for which there are no auditions. There are also still opportunities for children from the age of eight and for ladies of all ages who would like to get involved.”

Those who would rather not be on stage are welcome to get involved in one of the many back stage activities.

Musical numbers include 'Almost Like Being in Love' and 'Heather on the Hill' and Mr Waddell said: “It's a story of community, mystery and romance with many opportunities for adults, boys and girls of all ages to sing, dance and act as we bring this Highland fantasy to life.

“We would also welcome those that prefer to stay backstage getting involved with costumes, props, lighting, painting, publicity and son on.

“There's always plenty to do and there are sure to be new friends and laughs along the way, building to the excitement of the show itself playing to packed houses next February.”
