Tadley & Pamber Rural Protection forms in opposition to Bewley Homes’ plans to build 260 homes south of Tadley

A community action and campaign group has formed in opposition against plans to build 260 homes on land south of Tadley.

In June, Baughurst-based housing developer Bewley Homes revealed its plans to prepare an outline planning application for a large-scale housing development on land off Skates Lane.

A group of local residents has now come together to form Tadley & Pamber Rural Protection (TPRP), and its main concern is the potential loss of countryside land.

TPRP spokesperson Rob Bacchus said: “In our opinion, we cannot lose this incredible and eco-diverse, hugely significant and special area of the countryside.

“The damage to the environment, immediate surrounding areas of sites of special scientific interest and copses, the loss of habitat for innumerate species, wild flowers, flora and fauna, hedgerows, trees and bio-diverse ground, intrusion on rare and protected species, would be an ecological disaster were the proposal to go ahead.

“We simply must protect the corridor between Church Road and through this area of virgin countryside, to Pamber Forest.”

TPRP also has several other concerns about the 260-home development.

Mr Bacchus stated that the A340 is unable to support any more traffic, the building of houses would lead to the destruction of historical sites and that the development would impact the “quality of life” of local residents because it would put a strain on Tadley’s infrastructure, amenities and healthcare services.

He continued: “We are not saying there is not a need for housing in Tadley.

“What we are saying though, is that common sense must prevail.

“It’s simply the wrong place to build 260-plus homes, or any number of homes here, for that matter.”

TPRP has encouraged those who are opposed to the plans to write to their local councils and councillors.

The Tadley and District History Society has already raised concerns that the Skates Lane site may contain historically significant Roman ruins.

In response to some of the public backlash to the plans, Bewley’s senior land manager Matt Roberts said: “Tadley hasn’t seen much development in recent years, so we understand some of the opposition to new homes, but we are a local housebuilder who has been building in the Basingstoke region for over 30 years.

“Our reputation is vitally important and as our headquarters are based in Tadley, this would be a flagship development and a lasting legacy for the company.”
