The Town Show is performed in February half-term when a team of volunteers stage a musical starring budding performers from the surrounding area, aged eight and above.

It started in 1980 as collaboration between Hungerford Theatre Club and John O’Gaunt School, developing from themed variety shows produced by Scout leaders Cecil Hawkes and John Miles where performers were drawn from various groups in the town.

The first Town Show, Cinderella, was directed by Don Bolton from the Hungerford Theatre Club and it was such a success that a pantomime was staged each year until 1991 when it was decided the time was ripe to try a musical – Oliver!

Furthermore, Oliver was the first Town Show directed by David Clayton, who continued to direct both Town Shows and other productions within the company for more than 30 years.

It is for this reason that it seems right that the theatre group’s first town show since 2020 is also Oliver!

Tickets are available from Crown Needlework in the High Street.
