Community orchard planted at City Playground
About 30 residents turned up at the city playground at 10am last Saturday to help plant 17 apple trees in the park, with the all-English species including Blenheim orange and James Grieve, along with local varieties, Granny Shan and Breedon pippin.
People will be encouraged to pick the apples grown, although it will be two years until the trees produce reasonable quantities of fruit.
The planting is the second in the Growing Newbury Green campaign, supported by Newbury Town Council.
The first was planted last year, in Barn Crescent, and a third will be planted alongside the play area in Digby Road, Newbury, tomorrow (Sat).
Most of the trees were donated by Waitrose Newbury.
A partner from the store, Catriona Ottner, said: “Supporting the community orchard scheme was the choice of partners at Waitrose Newbury as a way of celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Partnership with John Lewis."
