Community radio for Newbury and Thatcham could soon be on airwaves

A group of local community members are planning to bid for a community radio licence under the provisional name of Kennet Radio and are holding a meeting to explain their plans and to find out if any more volunteers are interested in getting involved with the project.
The project is the brainchild of community campaigner, Richard Garvie, who said he saw it as a catalyst to creating new community facilities.
He said: "With our former local radio station now based outside the district there is now a big gap in the market for a cross-platform media service that covers local news, sport and events.
Both the leaders of Newbury and Thatcham Town Council's said that they were enthusiastic about the benefits a community radio could bring to West Berkshire.
Leader of Newbury Town Council, Julian Swift-Hook (Lib Dem, Pyle Hill), said: "A truly local community-based radio station would open up endless possibilities for groups and organisations in Newbury and it’s amazing how much support the idea has had so far.”
Leader of Thatcham Town Council, Lee Dillon (Lib Dem, Thatcham North), added: "The idea of a not-for-profit radio service that benefits Thatcham’s community, businesses and organisations is definitely something we should explore."
A meeting to discuss the idea will take place in the council chamber at Newbury Town Hall on Wednesday (26) from 7pm.
