Commuters to face hike in rail season tickets in January

This will take the average cost from Newbury to £4,595 from £4,440 at current, from Thatcham to £4,231, from £4,088 and from Hungerford to £4,815 from £4,652.
Train fare increases are based on the rate of inflation, plus one per cent, based on July’s Retail Price Index (RPI). Last month, the RPI rated inflation to be at 2.5 per cent according to the Office for National Statistics.
The timing of the announcement is unfortunate, with rail commuters this morning (Wednesday) facing substantial delays to their journeys, of up to two hours, due to a broken down freight train to the west of Reading.
Several passengers have taken to social media to voice their frustrations.
@tomcycles said: "Delayed trains with inadequate space, yet you still have the ability to raise ticket prices. I tip my bonnet to you @FGW , that’s remarkable."
The increase in rail season ticket fares follows a rise of 3.1 per cent in January this year.
