Compton man arrested following suspected arson
Thames Valley Police spokeswoman, Rhianne Pope, confirmed police were called at 11.22pm to a house in Burrell Road. A 44-year-old man from Compton was arrested in connection with the incident on suspicion of arson with intent /reckless as to whether life was endangered. He was released on bail until June 20.
According to Mike Wilson, manager of Red Watch at Newbury Fire Station, one pump from Newbury, together with two more from Goring and Didcot fire stations were called at 11.15pm, to the utility room fire.
On arrival, firefighters found an occupant of the house, helped by neighbours, had mostly succeeded in extinguishing the blaze, after being alerted by activated smoke alarms.
One person was taken to hospital by ambulance suffering from smoke inhalation.
The fire was confined to the utility room with about two square metres of damage to this room.
Firefighters left the scene after about an hour.
