Compton Swans award-winning owners
Husband-and-wife team Geoff Jones and Joan McGowan, from Tipperary in the Republic of Ireland, recently took over managing the Greene King-owned pub.
The couple are no strangers to the pub trade.
Mr Jones is an award-winning chef who has more than 25 years in the business and worked in four- and five-star properties as well as Michelin-star restaurants.
Mr Jones ran his own gastropub, The Fairways, in Tipperary, which has won multiple awards since it opened in 2006.
Mrs McGowan has recently won Business Woman of the Year for Network Ireland and heads up the marketing, administration and human resources element of the business.
The couple aim to build on their success in Ireland, where their kitchen team cooks everything from scratch.
Mrs McGowan said: “We’ve been looking at opening another pub for the last four years now. We searched the length and breadth of Ireland and there was nothing that we got a good gut feel for.
“We started looking in the UK around the same time and it has taken us four years to find a pub that ticked all the boxes.
“We immediately fell in love with the Newbury area. The Compton Swan is an amazing pub, with fantastic potential.
“The six plush letting bedrooms were a real plus. We see a great future for us in Compton.”
The Compton Swan is now open for lunches and evening meals seven days a week.
