Conservatives hold Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council
After the final result was declared at 2.25am during the early hours of this morning at the count, at Queen Mary’s College, Basingstoke, the Conservatives - who have controlled the council since 2006 - had a total 32 seats.
A third of the council seats were up for grabs and reflecting the national trend, Labour made gains taking four seats leaving them with a total of 14. The Liberal Democrats also lost two seats leaving them with a final total of 11 seats.
Independents also gained a seat, taking them to a total of three seats (2).
Three councillors in the area were up for re-election to the borough council, with a vacancy in the Pamber and Silchester ward, after councillor Keith Chapman (Con) stepped down at the election, after more than three decades.
Mr Chapman's former seat was taken by fellow Conservative, Roger Gardiner, with a resounding 837 votes, way ahead of his nearest rival, chairman of Silchester Parish Council, Steve Spillane, an Independent candidate, with 375 votes. In third place was former Silchester Parish Council councillor, Terry Price, the Labour candidate, with 190 votes.
In Baughurst and Tadley North, Lib Dem candidate, Michael Bound, proved victorious by a narrow majority of just nine votes, polling a total 645 votes - ahead by a whisker on his nearest rival, Conservative, Robert Tate, with 636. Labour candidate David Carr was in third place with 20 votes.
In KIngsclere, Conservative candidate, Cathy Osselton, held onto her seat with a huge majority, polling 823 votes, more than double the total votes polled by her only rival, Labour candidate John Rodway, with 372, a former Kingsclere Parish councillor.
In Tadley South, Tadley Town Council chairwoman and Liberal Democrat candidate, Jo Slimin, failed to make any dent in the hold by Conservatives in this ward. Conservative candidate, David Leeks, held onto his seat with a resounding 685 votes, while Mrs Slimin polled 231. Labour candidate Peter McCann was in third place with 195 votes.
