Control tower to go under the hammer
Greenham Parish Council have already expressed an interest in its purchase, toying with ideas to turn the venue into a Greenham-history museum, visitor centre and cafe.
Clerk to the council, John Boston, said he had been assured by asset strategy officer for West Berkshire Council, Amanda Dennis, that the highest bidder would not automatically be granted ownership.
In email correspondance with Mr Boston, she said: “West Berkshire Council is not obliged to accept the highest offer. Once the marketing period is over we will consider the merits of all the offers before making a decision.”
West Berkshire Labour spokesman, Richard Garvie, is also keen to see the control tower enjoyed by the public but fears the community may lose out if a private buyer takes hold.
He said: "The Conservatives want to sell it on the open market, despite community interest in turning the building into a focal point for the common and preserving the history of West Berkshires role in the Cold War conflict.
“The control tower could and should be used as a museum, with other uses such as a classroom, some public toilets and possibly a cafe, which would help encourage further use of the common.
“Greenham Common is a fantastic asset to West Berkshire, and we should do everything in our power not only to enhance it as a public facility, but also in preserving the heritage of the site."
An exact date has not been set for when it go on the market, however it is expected to be next year.
