'Could do better,' Ofsted tells Beenham school

But inspectors acknowledge its many strengths

BEENHAM Primary School needs improvement, says Ofsted.

A report following an inspection identified several areas of weakness. However, it also found a number of strengths.

The report stated the school was not yet ‘good’ because, during a period of high staff turnover, leaders have been unable to ensure teaching is consistently good.

Mathematics was singled out as an area that needed special attention. On the plus side, the report praised an “innovative” curriculum, pupils’ conduct and “strong teaching in Year 5 and Year 6, resulting in good and rapid progress”.

The report states that leaders “have ensured that pupils leave the school well prepared for the next stage of their education over a number of years”.

The school said provisional SATs results, published after the inspection, show the highest-yet results achieved at Beenham.

Headteacher Sue Butcher said: “The report confirms that Beenham Primary School has consistently developed pupils to above average progress and attainment, but that inconsistent staffing, together with the shortage of teachers that is a recurrent problem throughout West Berkshire, is making it increasingly difficult for small rural schools to obtain the quality of teachers that our young people deserve.

“Naturally we’re eager for the outcomes of our improvement work to be fully recognised and as such we will be glad to be re-inspected so that we can secure a ‘good’ judgement.”
