West Berkshire Council confirms rural road clean up by month’s end

Driving on country roads can be a precarious business.

But the addition of overhanging foliage can reduce visibility and manoeuvrability, posing a risk not just to drivers, but to horse riders, cyclists and pedestrians.

Concerns have been raised for the overgrown bracken on Reading Road between Aldworth and Upper Basildon.

“It has become very dangerous and lucky no one has had an accident yet,” said local resident, Julie Lovelock, who says the banks have not been cut since March last year.

But a West Berkshire Council spokesperson has confirmed it plans to resolve the issue by the end of this month — possibly sooner in this area.

They explained: “We suspend cutting on the verges over the spring and summer but restart at the end of this month.”

And regarding the overgrowth on this stretch of road, they added: “The tractor will be cutting in this area shortly.

“We do deal reactively with issues and the tractor will be in this location potentially next week.”
