A panel of councillors then met to consider all of the nominations and chose their winners.

A Community Contributor Award went to Anne Dibble in recognition of her outstanding service in the local Thatcham community via the Girlguiding Association.

She has been part of the Thatcham Girl Guides Association for more than 30 years and has helped countless girls learn about themselves, grow in confidence and be part of the community.

Another Community Contributor Award to Alice Cole in recognition of her key work as a youth leader at her cadet unit.

She organises their get to know you sessions, she organises the Christmas lights stall every year and has been called an asset to St John Ambulance.

And a third went to Thatcham Refillable in recognition of providing a vital refillable service for the people of Thatcham and helping others to become more sustainable.

Jenny and Tom Kirby run Thatcham Refillable but also lend a hand in supporting other businesses.

Mrs Kirby also supports groups like Eco Friends and SAS (Surfers against Sewage), helping to make Thatcham a plastic free town.

She said: “We are delighted that Thatcham council recognise our hard work.

“It’s great to be appreciated as a local business.

“We are so pleased the council recognises just how important our environment is at a local level.”

She added: “Being actively involved and giving our time up for Eco friends through plastic free Thatcham is fun way to spread the message and raise awareness in our community and get them involved to make changes.”

Parson’s Down School Eco-Committee won an environmental champion award in recognition of their on-going work achieving various awards through both eco-schools and plastic free communities.

It was the first school, in the town, to achieve plastic-free status.

Three Inspiring Young Person Awards went to Kennet School students Max Danskin, Callum Harrison and Sophia McKay for being exceptional students.

Mr Harrison is a Scout Leader at the 2nd Thatcham Scout Group and reflects the attributes and values expected from a Scout Leader; he does a huge amount of volunteering through the Scouts programme.

An Inspiring Young Person Award also went to Michael Jenkins for his outstanding volunteering service in the St John Ambulance Cadets.

He has been a volunteer since 12-years-old until he turned 18.

He has since joined an adult unit and continues to volunteer.

He has also been a peer educator and has helped 20 new cadets to complete their membership award.

He taught first aid, completed first aid duties, became a sergeant and carried the flag at last year’s Remembrance parade.

A lifetime achievement award went to Sue Dillon for her long and dedicated career as a teacher at Parsons Down School – where she worked for almost 50 years.

She holds the record for the longest serving contracted teacher in West Berkshire.
